Two Courts in Loudoun County VA for Divorce & Family Issues

In Loudoun County, family law matters are heard by two different courts, depending on the type of case. All divorce cases are handled by the Loudoun County Circuit Court. Cases involving child abuse, foster care, and child-related divorce issues are often handled in the Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court.

Loudoun County Circuit Court – Divorce Court

The Circuit Court handles uncontested and contested divorce cases. In cases where a divorce case is pending, issues involving child custody, child support, and parenting time are frequently heard in the Circuit Court, rather than transferring them to the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. If these issues are related to a closed divorce case, they will remain in the Circuit Court unless the judge issues an order remanding the issue or issues back to the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. When a case is transferred from one court to the other, it typically takes around 21 days to complete the transfer.

The Loudoun County Circuit Court is located at 18 East Market Street, Leesburg, VA 20176, on the third floor, in courtrooms 2A – 2E. The Circuit Court maintains hours Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court is also the court that hears family abuse protective order requests. If a preliminary Emergency Protective Order is issued, a full hearing, where both parties are before the judge, is also held in Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.
